A medium- and minimum-security state prison for men in Granite, in far-southwestern Oklahoma — the historic 'Granite Reformatory.'

Overview

Oklahoma State Reformatory is a state prison for men operated by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. It is in Granite, the county seat of Greer County, in the far southwestern corner of Oklahoma near the Quartz Mountains. The facility houses men in medium and minimum custody.

Oklahoma State Reformatory is one of the state’s older prisons, established as a reformatory in the early twentieth century and long known as the “Granite Reformatory.” It now operates as a general-population medium- and minimum-security facility within the state system.

Oklahoma DOC assigns custody level based on factors that include sentence length, time remaining, and conduct, and a person’s custody level can change during incarceration. The custody class and housing unit determine whether visits are contact or non-contact, so families confirm the arrangement that applies to the specific person before a first visit.

What Makes Oklahoma State Reformatory Different

Oklahoma State Reformatory is one of the oldest institutions in the state prison system. It opened as a reformatory in the early 1900s — built to hold younger and first-time offenders separately from the older Oklahoma State Penitentiary at McAlester — and the name and the “Granite Reformatory” nickname have stayed with the facility even as its mission shifted to a general-population medium- and minimum-security prison for men. Its setting is also distinctive: Granite sits in the far southwestern corner of Oklahoma, in the Quartz Mountains region near the Texas border, well away from the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. The remote location means visitors and families often travel a considerable distance, and the long-standing stone construction reflects the facility’s age relative to the newer prisons in the system.

Visiting

The statewide Oklahoma DOC rules above — the approved visitor list, the dress code, ID, and item limits — apply at Oklahoma State Reformatory. The facility’s own arrangements:

Getting There and Parking

Oklahoma State Reformatory is at 1700 East First Street in Granite, in Greer County in far southwestern Oklahoma. Granite is in the Quartz Mountains area, roughly between Altus to the south and Elk City to the north; it is reached by way of State Highway 9 and State Highway 6. The nearest larger commercial airports are in the Oklahoma City area to the northeast and in the Lawton area to the southeast, both a significant drive away.

Parking is on site. Visitors confirm current entry procedures, the visitor-processing location, and what may be brought onto the grounds with the facility before arriving, because items such as phones, smartwatches, cameras, and recording devices are not permitted inside. Visitors may generally bring only identification, a car key, and coins for vending machines.

Nearby Services

Granite is a small town with very limited lodging and dining. A wider range of hotels, restaurants, and fuel is available in the surrounding communities — Altus to the south and Elk City to the north along Interstate 40 are the nearest larger towns. Emergency medical care in the region is available locally, with larger hospitals in the Altus, Lawton, and Oklahoma City areas. Visitors traveling a long distance generally find the most options for fuel, food, and overnight stays in those larger towns rather than in Granite itself.

Mail

Oklahoma DOC routes incoming personal mail through an off-site digital vendor. As of September 1, 2024, letters and photos are mailed to the Securus Digital Mail Center in Dallas, where they are scanned and delivered to the inmate as a digital color image on a Securus tablet or kiosk — the original is not delivered. Inmates without device access get a free black-and-white printout. Address personal mail exactly as:

Inmate’s Full Name + ODOC Number Securus Digital Mail Center - Okla. Dept. of Corrections P.O. Box 223566 Dallas, TX 75222-3566

Illegible or incorrectly addressed mail may be returned or delayed.

Legal mail and special correspondence are not sent to the digital center — they go directly to the facility and are handled under the rules for privileged mail. Publications (magazines, newspapers, books) also go to the facility and must come directly from the publisher or an approved vendor. Packages cannot be sent to the digital mail center and must go to the facility.
