Health care in Oklahoma prisons

Unlike many states that hire a private prison-health company, Oklahoma delivers care in-house through Oklahoma DOC Health Services, the agency’s Medical Services Unit. It provides medical, dental, and mental-health care across Oklahoma DOC facilities using its own staff. The agency may contract for general inpatient hospital services and outside specialty providers, but there is no single named statewide private medical contractor.

Routine care begins at each prison’s on-site clinic, generally through a sick-call request submitted to the facility’s medical staff. Confirm the current sick-call procedure, any charges or co-pay, and any exemptions with the facility’s health services unit, because details change.

Inpatient and specialty care

Routine and lower-acuity care is delivered at each prison’s on-site clinic. Higher-acuity inpatient and specialty care is provided at designated specialty units, including:

  • Joseph Harp Correctional Center in Lexington, a medium-security men’s prison that houses a Mental Health Unit and provides inpatient medical care.
  • Mabel Bassett Correctional Center in McLoud, the women’s facility that serves as the women’s medical and mental-health hub in addition to women’s reception.

Mental-health and substance-use services are provided in-house as part of Oklahoma DOC Health Services, ranging from clinic-based care at individual prisons to the specialty units above.

The grievance process

A health or treatment concern that cannot be resolved with the facility’s medical staff can be raised through the Oklahoma DOC grievance process, the agency’s formal procedure for inmate complaints. The procedure has internal review steps within the prison and the department.

Oklahoma does not have a separate independent corrections ombudsman; the agency is governed by the internal Board of Corrections. The grievance process is the route for review of a health or treatment concern. Confirm the current grievance steps and deadlines with the facility’s medical staff.
