Overview
Mabel Bassett Correctional Center, on Kickapoo Road in McLoud, Pottawatomie County, is one of Oklahoma’s two state prisons for women. Oklahoma DOC operates it as the statewide reception and assessment center for all incoming women, a general-population women’s prison across all custody levels, and the women’s medical and mental-health hub. It holds women from minimum through maximum security and runs the standard Oklahoma DOC programming — education, work assignments, and treatment — alongside its reception and health-care functions.
What Makes Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Different
- It is the only women’s reception and assessment center in the state. Every woman entering Oklahoma state custody is processed at Mabel Bassett first, with assessment typically taking about 10 to 30 days (the facility has roughly 102 reception beds), after which she either remains here or transfers to another facility.
- It is the women’s medical and mental-health hub. Inpatient and specialty care for incarcerated women is centered here.
- A woman under a death sentence is held here. Mabel Bassett is the designated facility for a woman under a death sentence in Oklahoma; men’s death row and the state execution chamber are at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. There is no execution chamber at Mabel Bassett.
- It holds women across all custody levels, minimum through maximum, in McLoud, Pottawatomie County.
Visiting
The statewide Oklahoma DOC rules above — the approved visitor list, the dress code, ID, and item limits — apply at Mabel Bassett Correctional Center. The facility’s own arrangements:
Because Mabel Bassett is the women’s reception and assessment center, a woman who has just arrived may still be in intake processing, and higher-security or restrictive housing may limit visits early on — confirm a woman’s visitation status before traveling. The full approval process is in Visiting in Oklahoma.
