Phone & Video Calls in New Mexico (NMCD)
New Mexico's Securus phone, tablet, messaging, and video-visit options, and how to set up and fund an account.
How phone calls work
The New Mexico Corrections Department’s phone vendor is Securus, and families set up and fund accounts through Securus Correctional Billing Services. Phone service is prepaid: money is added in advance, and calls draw down the balance. The per-minute call rate is set in the vendor contract and is subject to change, so confirm the current rate with Securus before funding an account.
A Securus Debit account is the single funding source for Securus communication services — it covers calls, messaging stamps, tablet media, and video. The incarcerated person places the call; families cannot call in. To receive calls, set up an account through Securus and have the incarcerated person’s full committed name and NMCD number ready. Securus lists the service fees that apply to deposits and account transactions; review those fees at the point of payment, as they are charged in addition to call costs.
Tablets and messaging
New Mexico issued tablets statewide beginning July 1, 2024. In addition to placing phone calls, the tablets handle electronic messaging and other media, and they are the device through which scanned personal mail is delivered. (Incoming personal mail is scanned off-site before it reaches the tablet — see Mail.) The platform is part of the Securus system; messaging stamps and tablet media are paid for from the Securus Debit account. Per-message and per-item prices are set by the vendor and change, so confirm them before sending.
Video visits
The New Mexico Corrections Department offers video visits through the tablet system. Video visitation is separate from in-person visiting, and the visitor must be on the incarcerated person’s approved visitor list before a video visit can be scheduled. Because the video service and any per-session price are set by the vendor and change, confirm the current cost with Securus before booking, and confirm what is offered for the specific facility — arrangements are handled facility by facility. For the approved-list and in-person process, see Visiting.
Sending money
Calls, tablet messaging, and the trust account that funds commissary are separate. The Securus Debit account funds Securus communication services; a trust account, funded separately, covers commissary. For how to deposit to a trust account, see Sending Money.
