Personal mail is scanned off-site — it does not go to the prison. Since February 2022, letters, cards, and photos go to a Securus processing center in Seminole, Florida, where they are opened, inspected, and scanned. The inmate reads them on a Smart Communications tablet.

Each facility has its own P.O. box. There is no single statewide address. Use the box for the specific facility where the person is housed, listed on the NMCD Inmate Mail Addresses page.

Originals are not forwarded. The physical letter is scanned and uploaded; the paper itself is not delivered to the facility.

Legal mail goes to the facility — not to Florida. Legal and privileged mail goes directly to the prison and is opened in the inmate’s presence under NMCD policy CD-151200.

The inmate’s full committed name and NMCD number must appear on the mail.

How personal mail works now

Since February 2022, New Mexico does not deliver routine personal mail to the prison itself. Incoming personal letters, cards, and photos for people in New Mexico Corrections Department facilities go to an off-site Securus processing center in Seminole, Florida, where each item is opened, inspected for contraband, and scanned. The scanned mail is delivered electronically to the inmate’s Smart Communications tablet; the tablet program began July 1, 2024. The original paper is not forwarded to the facility.

Address personal mail with the inmate’s full committed name, their NMCD number, and the facility’s Seminole, Florida P.O. box:

Each facility uses a different P.O. box. For example, the Penitentiary of New Mexico uses PO Box 9190, Seminole, FL 33775-9189. Because the box and ZIP differ by facility, look up the exact address for the specific prison where the person is housed on the NMCD Inmate Mail Addresses page (or that facility’s page on this site) before sending.

Legal and privileged mail

Legal mail does not go to the Florida scanning center. Mail from courts, attorneys, and other privileged or special correspondents goes directly to the facility where the person is housed and is opened in the inmate’s presence under NMCD policy CD-151200, not scanned off-site. Attorneys confirm the facility’s current handling instructions with the prison.

Books, magazines, and publications

Publications — magazines, newspapers, and books — are handled under policy CD-151200 and follow that policy’s approved-source rules; they do not go to the Seminole scanning box. Rules on who may send a publication and where it ships can differ by facility and custody level, so confirm the current routing with the specific prison before ordering.

Packages

Packages are handled at the facility, not through the Securus scanning center. Confirm the facility’s package rules with the prison, since they differ by location and custody level.
