Overview
The Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC), on East Highway 54 in Vandalia, is Missouri’s reception and diagnostic center for women — the single statewide intake point where every woman entering the prison system is received, assessed (medical, mental health, and custody classification), and then assigned and transferred to a permanent prison. It also holds a general-population women’s population. Because of its reception role, a woman may be here only briefly, and the prison shown in the offender search can change within the first weeks or months. It opened in 1998 and holds about 2,000 women across minimum to maximum security. It is the designated facility for a woman under a death sentence in Missouri.
What Makes WERDCC Different
- It is the statewide women’s reception and diagnostic center, so a newly committed woman begins here before transferring to a permanent prison.
- It is the designated facility for a woman under a death sentence in Missouri.
- Visiting is limited during the reception period, so confirm the person’s status and location before traveling.
- It is in Vandalia, in northeast Missouri, between Mexico and Hannibal.
