Overview

Macon State Prison, on Highway 49 South in Oglethorpe in Macon County, is a close-security state prison for men in central Georgia, southwest of the city of Macon. Opened in 1994, it is one of the state’s higher-security men’s prisons, with a capacity of about 1,762. As a Tier I and II facility, it includes segregation and special-management (restrictive-housing) units alongside general-population housing, and it runs academic, vocational, counseling, and religious programs.

The name can cause confusion: Macon State Prison is in Oglethorpe (Macon County), while Central State Prison is a separate GDC prison in the city of Macon (Bibb County). Confirm which facility holds the person on GDC’s Find an Offender before traveling.

What Makes Macon Different

  • It is a close-security prison, one of the higher-security tiers in the Georgia system, so visiting and movement may be more restricted than at a medium-security prison.
  • Some housing units may be non-contact. Men in segregation or special management may have restricted or non-contact visits — confirm the current arrangements with the facility.
  • It is in Oglethorpe, Macon County, in central Georgia southwest of the city of Macon — not to be confused with Central State Prison in the city of Macon.
