How to address personal mail

As of mid-2026, incoming personal mail (letters, cards, photos) goes directly to the prison, where GDC staff open and inspect it for contraband before delivering it. Georgia does not currently route personal mail through an off-site scanning vendor.

Address mail with:

  • The person’s full committed name
  • Their GDC ID number
  • The full, un-abbreviated prison name
  • That prison’s mailing address

A change may be coming

In February 2025, GDC issued an “Offender Mail Solutions” request for proposals, seeking to route all incoming mail through a single central location rather than to each prison. This is the same model many states have adopted to scan or photocopy mail off-site.

As of this writing, no vendor had been confirmed live, and personal mail still goes to the facility.

Books and publications

Books, magazines, and newspapers must come directly from a publisher or an established retailer, under Georgia Administrative Rule 125-3-3. Content that threatens the security or order of the facility can be rejected.

Legal and privileged mail is opened only in the person’s presence and inspected for contraband — it is not read, and it cannot be withheld as punishment.
