Georgia's intake and classification prison for men, near Jackson, where newly sentenced men are processed before transfer; it also holds the state's male death row and the execution chamber.

Overview

The Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison (GDCP), on Highway 36 west of Jackson in Butts County, is Georgia’s statewide intake and classification prison for men. Most newly sentenced men enter the GDC system here, where they are assessed — medically, psychologically, and educationally — and assigned a security level and a permanent facility. Because of that role, a man may be at GDCP only briefly before transfer, so the prison shown in the inmate search can change. GDCP is a close-security facility holding about 2,487 men, and it also holds the state’s male death row and the execution chamber, along with a 192-bed special management (restrictive-housing) unit.

What Makes GDCP Different

  • It is the men’s intake and classification center, so a newly sentenced man is usually processed here before transferring to a permanent prison.
  • Visits are limited during intake — no visits for the first 60 days in diagnostic status, and then only immediate family.
  • It holds the state’s male death row and the execution chamber. Executions in Georgia are carried out here.
  • It is about 50 miles south of Atlanta, off Interstate 75.
