Overview
Augusta State Medical Prison (ASMP), on Gordon Highway in Grovetown, in Columbia County, in the Augusta area, is the Georgia Department of Corrections’ statewide acute-medical hub. It operates a roughly 95-bed prison hospital providing surgery, multi-specialty clinics, dialysis, dental and oral care, skilled nursing, and hospice and palliative care, and it carries a Level IV mental-health mission. People are transferred here from prisons across the state for hospital-level care; the assigned population is men in close security — about 1,326 — and the facility also treats female patients transferred in for care. ASMP also serves as a sex-offender release site. The prison opened in 1983.
