Overview
Florence West Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility, on East Diversion Dam Road in Florence, is a minimum-custody prison for men. It is operated by the GEO Group, a private company, under contract with ADCRR. The facility holds men in DUI and return-to-custody (RTC) programs, along with non-violent general-population inmates, and offers substance-abuse education and counseling, GED and adult basic education (ABE), work programs, and reentry preparation. It has about 750 beds and opened in 1997. Like other ADCRR facilities, it follows the statewide visiting, mail, and communication rules.
What Makes Florence West Different
- It is operated by the GEO Group under contract with the state, rather than directly by ADCRR, while still following ADCRR’s statewide rules.
- It is a minimum-custody men’s unit for DUI and return-to-custody (RTC) inmates, plus non-violent general population. “Return to custody” refers to people returned to custody for a parole or probation violation, often for a shorter period rather than a new sentence.
- Its programs focus on substance-abuse education and counseling, GED/ABE, work, and reentry.
- It is in Florence, Pinal County, southeast of Phoenix, in an area with several other state and contract prisons.
