A small women's TDCJ unit on the Gatesville campus, home to the system's female youthful offender program and sex offender treatment programs.

Overview

The Hilltop Unit is the smallest of the four women’s facilities that share TDCJ’s 1,283-acre Gatesville campus, alongside Crain, Murray, and Woodman. It houses lower-custody women (G1 through G3 and outside trusty) plus the system’s female youthful offenders, with a programs-heavy mission.

The campus has a long institutional history: Hilltop occupies grounds of the former Gatesville State School for Boys, the juvenile institution that closed in 1979 — and the road is still called State School Road. Hilltop and Crain are direct neighbors on the same street (1500 and 1401 State School Road), so reading the unit name on the gate matters.

What Makes Hilltop Unit Different

• It is TDCJ’s designated unit for female youthful offenders — TDCJ’s Champions youth program page names Hilltop as the female site, serving girls ages 14 to 17 with a minimum of ten hours of structured treatment services per week.
• It hosts TDCJ’s Sex Offender Treatment Program and Sex Offender Education Program for women — a placement reason families often want explained.
• At 553 beds it is the smallest unit on the women’s campus, with a correspondingly smaller visiting operation.
• Volunteer programs TDCJ lists here include Girl Scouts Beyond Bars and the Women’s Storybook Project, both built around mother-child connection.
• The unit doubles as regional infrastructure for TDCJ’s Gatesville region — maintenance headquarters, training facility, and regional medical offices are on site.

Visiting Hours and Procedures

The statewide rules above — approval, ID, prohibited items, and dress code — apply at Hilltop. What follows is specific to this unit.

TDCJ’s standard limits apply: normally one visit per weekly cycle, two-hour regular visits, and two adults per visit with children 17 and under not counted. Extended visits of up to four hours may be granted — at the warden’s discretion, if time and space allow — to visitors traveling more than 250 miles one way. Getting There and Parking

Hilltop is on State School Road off Business Highway 36, about three miles north of central Gatesville. TX-36 and US-84 connect Gatesville to the interstate corridors.

TDCJ does not publish visitor parking details for the unit. There is no fixed-route bus: The HOP, the regional transit district’s service, runs in-town Gatesville microtransit on weekdays only — it does not operate on the weekend visiting days — so the trip is by car.

Nearby Services

Gatesville is a small town with services along Main Street and the TX-36 corridor; hotel sites list a handful of in-town properties, including Days Inn by Wyndham on East Main Street. Waco, about an hour east, has the nearest large hotel and restaurant cluster.

Coryell Health on West Main Street in Gatesville operates the local hospital with a Level IV trauma center emergency room and round-the-clock EMS.

For support beyond the unit itself, the Texas Incarcerated Families Association (TIFA) runs workshops orienting new families to TDCJ, distributes TDCJ-approved clear coin purses for visiting, and holds chapter meetings across the state; its helpline is (512) 371-0900.
