Overview
SCI Muncy, on Route 405 in Clinton Township near Muncy, is Pennsylvania’s diagnostic and classification center for women — the statewide intake point where all newly committed women are received, evaluated (medical, mental health, security level, and programming), and then assigned and transferred to a permanent State Correctional Institution. Because of that role, a woman may be at Muncy only briefly, and the prison shown in the state locator can change within the first weeks or months. It is a medium/maximum-security facility that also houses a general-population women’s population, holding about 1,055 women (capacity about 1,643). Opened in 1953, it is the oldest women’s institution in the Pennsylvania system. Muncy is also the designated facility for any woman under a death sentence in Pennsylvania, though no women are currently under a death sentence in the state.
What Makes Muncy Different
