Ohio's main women's prison, in Marysville — the statewide women's reception center and the site of the state's death row for women.

Overview

The Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW), on Collins Avenue in Marysville, Union County, is Ohio’s largest women’s prison and the statewide reception and classification center for women entering the state system. Newly sentenced women are received here, assessed, given a security classification, and may then be transferred to a permanent prison — so a woman may be at ORW only briefly during reception, and the prison shown in the inmate search can change. ORW also houses the state’s death row for women. It opened in 1916 and is the oldest operating ODRC facility, with a capacity of about 2,000 or more.

What Makes ORW Different

  • It is the statewide women’s reception/intake center, so a newly sentenced woman may begin here and then transfer to a permanent prison.
  • Visiting is restricted during reception, so confirm the person’s status and location before traveling.
  • It is Ohio’s largest women’s prison and the oldest operating ODRC facility, opened in 1916.
