Overview
Lorain Correctional Institution (LorCI), on South Avon-Belden Road in Grafton, Lorain County, is the reception and classification prison for men sentenced from Stark, Summit, and Cuyahoga counties. Newly sentenced men from those counties are received here, assessed medically and psychologically, given a security classification, and then transferred to a permanent prison — so a man may be at Lorain only briefly, and the prison shown in the inmate search can change within weeks. (Most other men entering the Ohio system are received at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient instead.) Lorain opened in 1990 and has a capacity of about 1,089.
What Makes Lorain Different
- It is a reception/intake center, so a newly sentenced man usually begins here and is then transferred to a permanent prison.
- Visiting is restricted during reception, so confirm the person’s status and location before traveling.
- It serves three counties — men from Stark, Summit, and Cuyahoga counties are received here; most other men go to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.
- It is about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland, near Elyria.

Personal mail does not go to the prison. Ohio routes incoming letters and cards to the off-site ODRC Mail Processing Center in Youngstown, where they are opened, scanned, and delivered to the person electronically on a ViaPath tablet; address them with the person’s name and ID number. Legal mail, publications (publisher- or retailer-only books, magazines, and newspapers), and packages still go directly to the facility. Full rules are in Mail & Packages.
