Overview
The Correctional Reception Center (CRC), on State Route 762 in Orient, Pickaway County, is the reception and classification prison for most men entering the Ohio system. Newly sentenced men are received here, assessed medically and psychologically, given a security classification, and then transferred to a permanent prison — so a man may be at CRC only briefly, and the prison shown in the inmate search can change within weeks. (Men sentenced from Stark, Summit, and Cuyahoga counties are received at Lorain Correctional Institution instead.) CRC opened in 1987 and has an operational capacity of about 1,562.
What Makes CRC Different
- It is a reception/intake center, so a newly sentenced man usually begins here and is then transferred to a permanent prison.
- Visiting is restricted during reception, so confirm the person’s status and location before traveling.
- It serves most of the state — men from Stark, Summit, and Cuyahoga counties are received at Lorain Correctional Institution instead.
- It is about 15 miles south of Columbus, off Interstate 71.
