The men's central intake center for the Arkansas system, in Malvern, and the system's medical hub. Newly sentenced men are processed here, and it houses a special-needs unit for chronically and seriously ill prisoners.

Overview

The Ouachita River Correctional Unit, in Malvern, is the central intake center for men entering the Arkansas system — newly sentenced men are received, assessed, and classified here before being assigned to a long-term unit. It is also the ADC’s medical hub: it operates a Special Needs Unit (opened in 2012) that provides hospital-level beds and sheltered living for elderly, chronically ill, and acutely ill prisoners. ADC lists a rated capacity of about 1,782 and does not publish a current count. ADC’s own page does not assign a single custody level; the facility holds men across custody levels.

What Makes Ouachita River Different

  • It is the men’s reception and classification center, so most newly sentenced men in Arkansas pass through here first.
  • It is the system’s medical hub, with a special-needs unit for chronically and seriously ill prisoners and a hospital area.
  • Visiting during reception may be limited, because newly received men are still being processed.
  • It is off Interstate 30 near Malvern, more central than Arkansas’s Delta prisons.

Distances are approximate, based on map routing. Visitor parking is on site.

Nearby Services

Malvern, about 2 miles away, has the nearest restaurants and lodging, with more in Hot Springs. The nearest hospital emergency room is Baptist Health Medical Center–Hot Spring County in Malvern, the closest 24-hour ER to the unit.

Mail

Personal mail does not go to the unit. Since September 2025, ADC routes non-legal personal letters and photos to an off-site scanning center in Tampa, Florida, addressed with the person’s name and ADC number; the person receives the mail electronically. Legal mail, books, and magazines still go directly to the unit at the Walco Lane address. Full addressing details are in Mail & Packages.

A Note on History

The unit opened in 2003, and its special-needs medical unit was added in 2012. In 2025, the Arkansas Division of Correction agreed to a voluntary settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice under the Americans with Disabilities Act, addressing accessible cells, showers, and medical and mobility services for prisoners with disabilities at the Ouachita River Unit. This is documented in the sources cited above.
