Overview
The East Arkansas Regional Unit, near Marianna in the Delta, is a large regional prison holding men in minimum, medium, and maximum custody, with a rated capacity of about 1,648 (established 1992). It runs field crops and an agricultural operation, a jail operation, and building-trades and education programs. Because it holds a maximum-security component, a person here may be in a higher-security setting than at a typical regional unit.
What Makes East Arkansas Different
- It holds the full custody range, including maximum security, so visiting rules depend on the person’s status.
- It is remote, in the Delta about 17 miles southeast of Forrest City and roughly 80 miles east of Pine Bluff — the drive is the defining logistical fact for visitors.
- It runs agricultural and building-trades programs and operates a jail.
- There is no public transit to the unit.
