Overview
The Barbara Ester Unit, west of Pine Bluff, is Arkansas’s first unit dedicated to re-entry — it holds men who are within about six months of release, along with some parole violators, and concentrates release-oriented programming (education, “Preparing for Success,” workforce, and a college partnership). It opened in 2015, has a rated capacity of about 640, and is one of three co-located units in the Pine Bluff Complex. It is named for Cpl. Barbara Ester, an Arkansas corrections officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2012.
