Wisconsin's women's prison and statewide women's reception/intake center, in Fond du Lac, spanning maximum and medium custody.

Overview

Taycheedah Correctional Institution (TCI) is the Wisconsin Department of Corrections facility that houses women across maximum and medium custody levels. It is the state’s women’s prison and also serves as the statewide reception and intake center for women, where most newly sentenced women enter the WI DOC system. The institution is operated by the department’s Division of Adult Institutions in Fond du Lac, in east-central Wisconsin.

Security level is assigned during the intake and classification process. Because Taycheedah is the women’s reception center, the population includes both women in the intake (“A&E”) phase and women in general population. Wisconsin does not have a death penalty — the state abolished it in 1853 — so there is no death row or execution chamber at any Wisconsin prison.

What Makes Taycheedah Different

Taycheedah is the statewide women’s prison and the women’s reception/intake center in one facility. Women entering WI DOC custody are typically received and classified here before being assigned a security level and housing. The institution holds women at maximum and medium custody, and its programming is gender-responsive — designed for the women in its custody rather than adapted from a men’s facility.

Newly admitted women begin in intake (“A&E”) status, during which visiting and other arrangements are more limited; general-population status follows after classification. Because the same facility serves both reception and longer-term confinement, a woman’s status and housing unit can change after intake. Re-check the WI DOC offender locator for the current facility and status.
