A medium-security men's prison in Sturtevant, in southeastern Wisconsin.

Overview

Racine Correctional Institution (RCI) is a medium-security state prison for men in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (WI DOC) through its Division of Adult Institutions.

Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853 — the first U.S. state to do so — and has no death row and no execution chamber.

Men are assigned a security level at intake, which for the Wisconsin system takes place at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun. People are placed at Racine by the department; families do not choose the facility, and the department does not automatically notify families of a transfer. Re-check the offender locator before traveling.

What Makes Racine Different

Racine Correctional Institution is a medium-security general-population institution for men in southeastern Wisconsin, between Milwaukee and the Illinois state line. It shares the village of Sturtevant with two other WI DOC facilities — the Racine Youthful Offender Correctional Facility and the Sturtevant Transitional Facility — which are separate institutions with their own operations. Because the three are in the same community and have similar names, confirm on the offender locator which facility holds a specific person before traveling or sending mail.
