Overview
Columbia Correctional Institution (CCI) is a maximum-security men’s prison in Portage, in Columbia County, central Wisconsin. The institution opened in 1986 and sits on a 110-acre site. According to WI DOC, it operates ten maximum-security units of 50 cells each, plus one minimum-security unit with 150 beds, for a total capacity of about 650. It is one of Wisconsin’s maximum-security institutions for men, run by the Department of Corrections’ Division of Adult Institutions.
Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853 — the first U.S. state to do so — so there is no death row and no execution chamber at any Wisconsin prison.

What Makes Columbia Different

- It also operates a minimum-security unit (150 beds) alongside its ten maximum-security units, so custody levels on the grounds differ.
- It is in central Wisconsin near Portage, off the Interstate 39/90/94 corridor, which makes it reachable from Madison and points north and south.
