Overview
Lakin Correctional Center, in West Columbia on the Ohio River, is West Virginia’s only women’s prison, holding women at all custody levels from minimum to maximum. Because it is the state’s sole women’s facility, every woman sentenced to state prison is held here. It opened in 2003, and its programs include adult education and high-school equivalency, culinary arts, horticulture and landscaping, and an on-site garment and sewing operation. It also operates a KIDS Unit (Keeping Infant Development Successful), a prison-nursery program in which a baby born to a woman while she is incarcerated can stay with her at the facility for up to about 18 months. West Virginia has no death penalty, so there is no death row.

Nearby Services
Point Pleasant has the nearest food, gas, and lodging, with more across the Ohio River in Gallipolis, Ohio. The nearest 24/7 emergency room is Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant, about 6 miles south.
Personal mail does not go to the prison. Since 2023, West Virginia routes personal letters to an off-site scanning center in Maryland, addressed with the person’s name and OID number; the person receives the mail as images on a tablet, and photos must be sent through the tablet rather than mailed. Legal mail, books, and magazines go to the facility. Full addressing details are in Mail & Packages.
A Note on History
The prison opened in 2003 on land that was once part of the Lakin State Hospital, a state hospital established in 1926 to serve African American patients during the era of racial segregation and notably staffed by Black professionals. A separate long-term-care state hospital still operates near the prison. This history is documented in the sources cited above.
