One of West Virginia's largest and oldest prisons, a medium-security men's facility in the central mountains near Elkins, and the main classification and intake center for sentenced men.
Overview
Huttonsville Correctional Center, near Huttonsville in the central mountains, is one of West Virginia’s largest and oldest prisons — created by the Legislature in 1937 and holding about 1,125 men in medium custody as of mid-2024. It is also the main classification and intake center for sentenced men: people are received and assessed here for placement at Huttonsville or transfer to another prison. The facility runs a residential substance-abuse treatment unit, a geriatric unit, an on-site 46-bed work camp (opened 2012), and Correctional Industries operations — including a long-running Braille transcription program that turns textbooks into Braille distributed across the country. West Virginia has no death penalty, so there is no death row.

Mail
Personal mail does not go to the prison. Since 2023, West Virginia routes personal letters to an off-site scanning center in Maryland, addressed with the person’s name and OID number; the person receives the mail as images on a tablet, and photos must be sent through the tablet rather than mailed. Legal mail, books, and magazines go to the facility at its P.O. Box. Full addressing details are in Mail & Packages.
