The statewide men's reception/diagnostic (intake) center, in Shelton, also holding general population.

Overview

Washington Corrections Center, in Shelton, is the statewide reception and diagnostic (intake) center for men in the Washington State Department of Corrections, and it also holds general population. Most men entering the state prison system are received here, assessed, and classified before being assigned to another facility. Because of that role, a man may be at the facility only briefly during reception, and the prison shown in the incarcerated search can change within the first weeks.

The facility houses medium, close, and maximum custody in its housing units and includes the Evergreen Unit, a reentry unit for incarcerated individuals who are within one year of release.

What Makes Washington Corrections Center Different

  • It is the men’s statewide intake center, where most newly sentenced men in Washington are received before going to another prison.
  • It performs reception and classification, assessing each person’s custody level and program needs to determine where they are assigned.
  • Many people transfer out after classification, so the facility shown in the incarcerated search often changes during the first weeks.
