Overview
The Mark W. Stiles Unit is the Texas prison system’s major presence on the Gulf Coast’s eastern end, southeast of Beaumont. Opened in 1993, it houses the full custody range — G1 through G5, security detention, and safekeeping — and shares roughly 776 acres with two other state facilities, the Gist State Jail and the LeBlanc Unit, so the approach passes multiple prison properties and signs.
TDCJ’s unit page describes a substantial medical mission: a 17-bed infirmary with assisted-living beds, onsite infectious-disease specialty clinics and an HIV program, wheelchair-accommodated housing, and all services on a single level, with care managed by UTMB. People with significant medical needs are housed here for those services.
What Makes Mark W. Stiles Unit Different
- The medical mission shapes the population: infirmary beds, infectious-disease and HIV specialty care, and accessible housing draw transfers from across the region.
- It shares its campus with the Gist State Jail and LeBlanc Unit — three state facilities on one rural site, each with its own visiting list, so the assigned unit determines the destination.
- The separate Federal Correctional Complex Beaumont nearby is the area’s most common point of confusion for families (see the warning above).
- Gulf Coast weather is part of planning here: TDCJ partially evacuated Stiles ahead of Hurricane Laura in 2020, and hurricane-season disruptions to operations and visiting are possible roughly August through October. TDCJ posts alerts on its website.
- Air conditioning is partial: TDCJ’s air conditioning project page (updated May 2026) lists 774 cool beds completed and 432 more under construction at Stiles, against a 3,367-person capacity.
Visiting Hours and Procedures
The statewide rules above — approval, ID, prohibited items, and dress code — apply at Stiles. What follows is specific to this unit.
Video visiting at Stiles is ambiguous in TDCJ’s own publications: the family guide (May 2026) lists Stiles among units that schedule remote video visits through Securus, but the unit’s posted visitation schedule shows no video hours as of June 2026. Confirm with the unit before counting on a video visit.
Because the unit houses people in medical care, treatment movement or infirmary placement can affect whether someone is available for a visit on a given day. Account setup and phone rates are covered in Phone & Video Calls.
Getting There and Parking
Stiles is on FM 3514 southeast of Beaumont, reached from US 69/96/287 on the city’s south side.
TDCJ does not publish visitor parking details for the unit. Beaumont’s city bus routes do not serve FM 3514, so the final approach is by car.
Nearby Services
Gas, food, and lodging are in Beaumont rather than near the unit. Hotels cluster along I-10, including the MCM Elegante Hotel and the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Beaumont Plaza on Walden Road, both about 15 minutes from the unit.
Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas on College Street in Beaumont operates a 24-hour emergency department, about nine road miles from the unit.
For support beyond the unit itself, the Texas Inmate Families Association is a statewide nonprofit focused on education, advocacy, and prison-system navigation resources for families with someone in TDCJ custody.
