Overview

The Gib Lewis Unit is a general-population men’s prison in deep East Texas, about a mile east of Woodville off Highway 190. TDCJ lists its capacity at about 2,380 beds. The unit opened in August 1990, and its medical care is provided through the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), TDCJ’s statewide correctional health partner.

The unit holds a broad custody mix, from G1 through G5, so housing and visiting follow each incarcerated person’s classification rather than one unit-wide rule.

General-population housing typically uses standard contact visiting, while more restrictive housing can mean different room assignments or non-contact procedures on the same weekend. The format follows the incarcerated person’s classification, so two families arriving the same morning may have different experiences.

The Administrative Segregation Intermediate Care Program is part of the unit’s restrictive-housing area. A person in that program may be subject to the housing and visiting procedures that apply to restrictive housing rather than to general population.

Contact has a sequence to it. A phone number must be on the incarcerated person’s approved contact list before calls can connect, and after intake or a transfer that approval can take time to process.
