Overview

The Formby State Jail is a men’s TDCJ state jail near Plainview, in the Texas Panhandle/South Plains region of West Texas. TDCJ lists it at about 1,100 beds. It opened in September 1995 and sits about five miles east of Plainview in Hale County.

Visiting Hours and Procedures

The statewide rules above — approval, ID, prohibited items, and dress code — apply at Formby State Jail. Visitation is limited to people on the incarcerated person’s approved Visitors List (everyone 18 and older except the attorney of record), and visits are scheduled through the TDCJ Online Visitation Portal. A regular visit is generally up to two hours, with one visit per visiting cycle (Monday through Sunday). Visitors traveling more than 300 miles one way may request a special visit of up to four hours.

Formby’s custody mix is the main reason one schedule does not mean one visiting experience. General-population housing typically uses standard contact visiting, while more restrictive housing can mean different room assignments or non-contact procedures on the same weekend. The format follows the incarcerated person’s classification, so two families arriving the same morning may have different experiences.

Getting There and Parking

Formby is in Hale County, about five miles east of Plainview in the Texas Panhandle, on the interstate corridor between Lubbock to the south and Amarillo to the north. The trip is by private vehicle.

Because the unit is in the Panhandle/South Plains, many families travel a long distance to visit. Visitors coming more than 300 miles one way may request a longer special visit under TDCJ’s rules; that request is made in advance, not at the gate.

Phones, Mail, and Video

Contact has a sequence to it. A phone number must be on the incarcerated person’s approved contact list before calls can connect, and after intake or a transfer that approval can take time to process. Plainview is the nearest service center for gas, food, groceries, and lodging, with more extensive options in Lubbock about an hour to the south. Travelers planning an overnight trip generally find the widest selection of chain lodging and restaurants in the Lubbock area.
