General-population housing typically uses standard contact visiting, while more restrictive housing can mean different room assignments or non-contact procedures on the same weekend. The format follows the incarcerated person’s classification, so two families arriving the same morning may have different experiences.

The unit’s size is the other variable. With about 4,139 beds, moving people from housing to the visiting area takes longer than at a small unit, so the same posted hours can produce a longer wait between check-in and the start of a visit.

Getting There and Parking

Coffield is in a rural section of Anderson County. The drive starts on highways but finishes on farm-to-market roads, and services thin out over the last stretch.

There is no fixed-route bus to the unit. GoBus, the transit program of the East Texas Council of Governments, runs shared-ride, advance-reservation service across Anderson County on weekdays only — not on the weekend visiting days — so the trip is by car.

The nearest hospital and urgent care are in Palestine, not near the unit. Palestine Regional Medical Center on South Loop 256 operates a 24-hour emergency room, a CHRISTUS emergency room also operates in Palestine, and Access Medical Clinic on South Loop 256 is a walk-in option.

Phones, Mail, and Video

Contact has a sequence to it. A phone number must be on the incarcerated person’s approved contact list before calls can connect, and after intake or a transfer that approval can take time to process. Palestine is the nearest service center for gas, food, groceries, and lodging before the prison cluster, and options thin out significantly past the Palestine area on the final farm-to-market approach.
