Overview

The Bartlett Innovation Unit is a TDCJ men’s prison in Williamson County, in Central Texas between Austin and Temple. TDCJ lists it at about 1,049 beds. The building first opened in October 1995 as the privately operated Bartlett State Jail under CoreCivic (Corrections Corporation of America) and closed in June 2017 during a statewide population decline. TDCJ reopened it in October 2024 under direct state management as the Bartlett Innovation Unit.

Visiting format here follows the incarcerated person’s classification rather than one unit-wide rule. General-population housing typically uses standard contact visiting, while more restrictive housing can mean different room assignments or non-contact procedures on the same weekend. Two families arriving the same morning may have different experiences.

Bartlett sits in Central Texas between Austin and Temple. The town straddles the Williamson and Bell county line, and TDCJ assigns the unit to Williamson County.

There is no fixed-route bus to the unit, so the trip is by private vehicle. Plan for the final approach on local roads, where services thin out near the unit.

Phones, Mail, and Video

Contact has a sequence to it. A phone number must be on the incarcerated person’s approved contact list before calls can connect, and after intake or a transfer that approval can take time to process.
