Overview
James V. Allred Unit is a large TDCJ men’s prison in north Texas. TDCJ says the unit opened in June 1995, houses male incarcerated people across G1-G5 custody plus Safekeeping and Security Detention, and has been ACA-accredited since August 2006.
TDCJ lists 4,438 beds, placing Allred among the system’s larger prisons, and the unit page combines general population, restrictive housing, vocational programming, and a substantial on-site medical operation. Its location outside Wichita Falls also changes travel patterns: Wichita Falls is the service hub for visits, but the prison itself sits on the rural FM 369 corridor closer to the Oklahoma line than to the east Texas prison cluster.
What Makes James V. Allred Unit Different
- TDCJ lists Allred at 4,438 beds, making it one of the larger prisons in the agency.
- The unit houses G1 through G5 custody, Safekeeping, and Security Detention, so the same weekend schedule can still produce different visit formats depending on the incarcerated person’s classification.
- TDCJ says medical care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a fully staffed 13-bed infirmary that includes hospice and two mental-health crisis management beds.
- Additional operations listed by TDCJ include security horses, security pack canines, a unit garden, and scent-specific canines, which is not a standard mix across every general population prison.
Visiting Hours and Procedures
Allred follows the same statewide TDCJ approval and portal process used at other Texas prisons, but the broader custody range matters more here because contact, general, and restrictive visiting can all exist under the same unit schedule.
Allred’s classification range is the main reason unit-level context matters. Under TDCJ’s April 2025 rules, G1 through G3 populations normally receive contact visiting, while more restrictive statuses can move a person into general visiting or a tighter monthly schedule. The same rules also say an incarcerated person is not normally scheduled for both a contact visit and a general visit on the same day or during the same week, even though split visits can be approved in one- or two-hour increments when requested at check-in. The statewide rules above, and the full visit-length and extended-visit details in Visiting in Texas, apply at Allred.
Getting There and Parking
Allred is outside the Wichita Falls street grid, so most trips use Wichita Falls as the last full-service stop before the final FM 369 segment north of the city.
The nearest public transportation system is in Wichita Falls rather than at the prison. The City of Wichita Falls says Falls Ride operates a route-deviation and demand-response system inside the city, with advance reservations required and service Monday through Saturday. TDCJ’s Allred page does not list transit service to the prison gate, so the last part of the trip remains the FM 369 approach northwest of Wichita Falls.
Medical and urgent-care services are also concentrated in Wichita Falls. United Regional describes itself as the trusted healthcare provider for Wichita Falls and the surrounding region, and its emergency and trauma service is the only Level II trauma center in the region. CareNow also operates a walk-in urgent care clinic on Midwestern Parkway in Wichita Falls with extended hours for non-emergency illnesses and injuries.
Nearby Services
Wichita Falls is the practical lodging and retail base for Allred visits. Official hotel sites show chain properties across the city, including Hampton Inn Wichita Falls North on Sierra Drive, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Wichita Falls on Kell Boulevard, and Days Inn by Wyndham Wichita Falls off I-44. The prison is outside the main hotel and restaurant corridors even though the drive from Wichita Falls is short.
Most grocery, pharmacy, and fuel stops used for Allred trips are in Wichita Falls rather than at the unit entrance. The city’s north and southwest commercial corridors also put hospital, urgent care, and hotel options in the same broader service area before the turn onto FM 369. For broader family support beyond the unit itself, the Texas Inmate Families Association is a statewide nonprofit focused on education, advocacy, and prison-system navigation resources for families with someone in TDCJ custody.
