Overview
The Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, on Stewarts Lane in Nashville, is Tennessee’s reception and classification center for women — the statewide intake point where women entering TDOC custody are received, assessed (medical, mental health, custody level, and programming), and then assigned and transferred to a permanent prison. Because of that role, a woman may be here only briefly, and the prison shown in the state locator can change within the first weeks or months. The center also holds a general-population women’s population and is the designated facility for women under a death sentence in Tennessee. It was known as the Tennessee Prison for Women until it was renamed the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in 2020. It holds about 817 women across minimum to maximum security.
What Makes the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center Different
- It is the women’s reception and classification center, so a newly committed woman usually begins here before transferring to a permanent prison.
- It is the designated facility for women under a death sentence in Tennessee.
- It was formerly the Tennessee Prison for Women, renamed in 2020 — older records may use the prior name.
- Visiting is limited during the reception period, so confirm the person’s status and location before traveling.

Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131, with “TDOC ID#” immediately before the number. Mail sent directly to the prison is returned. Legal mail still goes directly to the institution.
