Overview
The John J. Moran Medium Security Facility is where most sentenced men in Rhode Island serve their time: the system’s largest building, opened in 1992 on 29 acres of the ACI campus, with 1,186 beds and a recent population around 800. Its work programs are the system’s industrial core — a license-plate shop, garment and upholstery shops, carpentry, and auto body — alongside an education building, gym, and a large outdoor yard.
What Makes the Moran Facility Different
- The most visiting windows on the campus: a morning video-only block plus three afternoon-and-evening blocks where families choose in-person or video — more daily options than any other ACI facility.
- Tuesdays are dark — the posted calendar shows no regular visits on Tuesdays, so plan around it.
- The housing-unit letter controls the day. Units A through F rotate through the blocks, and the monthly PDF is the only way to match the person’s unit to a date.
- Check-in is forgiving by ACI standards: visitors may arrive 15 minutes before a block and check in any time until its cutoff (2:15, 5:00, or 8:00 p.m.) — compare Maximum’s 10-minute processing window.
- Professional visits (attorneys) run seven days a week, 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with two posted blackout windows.
Visiting Hours and Procedures
The statewide rules above — the 9-name visiting list, the dress code, ID, and screening — apply at Moran. What follows is specific to this facility.
The monthly schedule changes, and RIDOC’s advice is to verify before every visit — the 24/7 information line at (401) 414-2871 covers visiting times. The full approval-list process, dress code, and entry rules are in Visiting in Rhode Island.
Getting There and Parking
RIDOC’s published directions: I-95 to Exit 14 (14B northbound), Route 37 West to Exit 3 (Pontiac Avenue), left at the end of the exit, then right onto Howard Avenue at the third light — past Minimum Security, a left at the next intersection leads to Inmate Accounts and the Moran facility.
RIDOC publishes no visitor parking details. The Inmate Accounts office — where in-person deposits happen — is in Building 138 next door at 51 West Road, weekday mornings and early afternoons.

The Garden City Center shopping area and a Shaw’s supermarket are minutes away on the Route 22 corridor, with food options clustered at Chapel View on Sockanosset Cross Road. Kent Hospital in Warwick has an emergency department staffed around the clock about 10 minutes away, and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence is the state’s only Level I trauma center.
