Overview
Deer Ridge Correctional Institution, about four miles east of Madras, is Oregon’s newest prison — its minimum-security side opened in 2007 and the medium-security building was completed in 2008. Although it was built with roughly 2,000 beds, it has operated well below that capacity: a large share of the medium-security building has been kept off-line for budget reasons, and the facility runs mainly as a minimum-security prison (budgeted for about 900). Programs include welding, a limited-maintenance electrician apprenticeship, education, cognitive and mental-health programs, and Oregon Corrections Enterprises operations (a laundry and a call center).
