Overview
Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, in Wilsonville, has two jobs. It is Oregon’s only women’s prison, holding women at every custody level from intake to release. It is also the statewide intake center, where nearly everyone sentenced to ODOC — men and women — is processed first. Intake takes about 30 days of medical, mental-health, and custody screening. After intake, men are transferred to a men’s prison, and women remain at Coffee Creek. The campus opened in 2001–2002 and sits in the Portland metro, off Interstate 5.
What Makes Coffee Creek Different
- It is Oregon’s only women’s prison. Every woman in ODOC custody is held here.
- It is the statewide intake point for everyone. A newly sentenced person of any gender typically begins here, so families of a just-committed man may first locate him at Coffee Creek before he transfers out.
- No visits happen during intake. Because of the intake role, a person in their first weeks generally cannot be visited anywhere, including here — contact is by phone and mail until intake ends.
- Parenting support exists. The YWCA-run Family Preservation Project offers therapeutic child visitation and parenting support for incarcerated mothers, alongside ODOC’s own parenting programs.
