A medium-security state prison for men in Vanceboro, in eastern North Carolina, and one of the system's large processing centers for new admissions.

Overview

Craven Correctional Institution is a medium-security state prison for men in Vanceboro, in eastern North Carolina. In addition to housing a general medium-custody population, it operates as one of the state’s largest processing centers, where newly admitted men are tested, evaluated, and interviewed during an intake period that runs several weeks before they are assigned to a long-term facility, work assignment, and programs. The prison is run by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC).

What Makes Craven Different

Craven is one of North Carolina’s largest intake points for men entering the state prison system. North Carolina uses a distributed reception model rather than a single statewide men’s diagnostic center, and Craven is one of the principal sites where new admissions are processed. During this intake stage, staff conduct testing, evaluation, and interviews over roughly three to four weeks to determine each person’s custody level, facility assignment, work detail, and program eligibility; the NCDAC reports that several hundred people move through the center each month. Because of this role, many men housed at Craven are there temporarily and are later transferred to another prison.

Mail

Incoming personal mail does not go to the prison. North Carolina sends personal mail to an off-site vendor, TextBehind, which opens and scans it and delivers a digital copy to the incarcerated person’s tablet; original letters, cards, and packages are returned to the sender. Address personal mail with the person’s full name and OPUS number and the full (unabbreviated) prison name to: TextBehind, P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131 — and include the sender’s full first and last name in the return address. Legal mail is exempt and goes directly to the facility. Books and publications must come from a publisher or online retailer, shipped to the prison’s street address, not the TextBehind box. Full rules are in Mail & Packages.
