New Jersey's treatment prison for men sentenced for sex offenses, in Avenel — next to East Jersey State Prison and separate from the co-located Special Treatment Unit, so confirming which facility holds the person matters.
Overview
The Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center, in Avenel, is a New Jersey prison that holds men sentenced for sex offenses and provides a court-ordered treatment program under the state’s Sex Offender Act. It opened in 1976 and held about 424 men as of January 1, 2026. The facility is next to East Jersey State Prison in Avenel.
A separate facility, the Special Treatment Unit, is also in Avenel but is not the same place: it holds people who have been civilly committed after their sentences end under a different state law. ADTC holds people serving criminal sentences, and the two are run separately — so the first step is confirming which facility holds the person.
About ADTC
It is a specialized treatment facility. ADTC provides a court-ordered treatment program under the New Jersey Sex Offender Act for the men sentenced there.
It is next to East Jersey State Prison. Both are in Avenel; confirm the person is at ADTC (8 Production Way) and not the neighboring prison.
It is separate from the Special Treatment Unit. The Special Treatment Unit, also in Avenel, is a different facility for people civilly committed after their sentences, with its own visiting.
