Overview
Marquette Branch Prison, on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula, is one of Michigan’s maximum-security prisons for men and one of its oldest, a sandstone institution completed in 1889. It holds about 1,100 men across a Level V (maximum) section and Level I (minimum) units, each with its own visiting rules. For families, the defining fact is distance: Marquette is a drive of seven hours or more from Detroit (about 450 miles) and is closer to parts of Wisconsin than to downstate Michigan.
What Makes Marquette Different
- It is a maximum-security prison, and its Level V units have non-contact visiting, while the Level I (minimum) units allow contact visits — so the visit type depends on the man’s housing.
- It is remote. In the Upper Peninsula on Lake Superior, it is a seven-plus-hour drive from Detroit and closer to Green Bay, Wisconsin (about 3.5 hours) — one of the longest trips to visit of any prison in the state.
- It is historic. Built in 1889, it is one of Michigan’s oldest prisons and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
