Overview

Ionia Correctional Facility, on West Bluewater Highway in Ionia, is the maximum-security prison of the Ionia cluster and the only Ionia prison holding Level V custody. It opened in 1987 and is nicknamed “I-Max.” It has five Level V units — two of them administrative segregation — and two Level II units. The perimeter includes a stun fence and gun towers. It is one of three state prisons clustered on West Bluewater Highway, alongside Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility and Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility.
