Overview
The Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, in Jackson, is Michigan’s main reception and classification center for men — nearly every newly sentenced man (and many returning parole violators) is processed here first. Reception involves medical, psychological, educational, and security screening and usually takes about 30 to 45 days before transfer to a permanent prison. The center is also home to the Duane L. Waters Health Center, MDOC’s inpatient hospital that serves prisoners from across the state. Egeler is part of the Jackson prison cluster created when the historic State Prison of Southern Michigan was divided in 1988.
What Makes Egeler Different
- It is the front door for newly sentenced men. A family trying to locate a man who was just sentenced should expect to find him here first, usually for about a month.
- Family visits are generally not allowed during reception. Until a man is classified and transferred, only attorney, clergy, and Ombudsman visits are permitted — letters and phone calls are the way to stay in touch.
- It houses the state’s prison hospital. The Duane L. Waters Health Center treats prisoners from across Michigan; its medical units have their own visiting schedule, separate from reception.
- It is one of several prisons in Jackson, so confirm the exact facility before traveling.
