G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility, on N. Elm Road in Jackson, is a multi-level men’s prison with Levels I, II, and IV custody. It opened in 1985 and occupies about 114 acres off Interstate 94. It is a reentry facility that serves the statewide medical population and the Wayne County (Detroit) population. It hosts the Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund, a braille-transcription program. Cotton sits on the former State Prison of Southern Michigan grounds, alongside Cooper Street, Parnall, and the Charles Egeler Reception Center.
