Cooper Street Correctional Facility, on Cooper Street in Jackson, is a Level I men’s prison with about 1,752 beds. It opened in 1997. It is a release and pre-parole facility for people about to parole, discharge, or transfer. It is also home to the men’s Special Alternative Incarceration (SAI) program, a 90-day paramilitary “boot camp” for eligible prisoners. Cooper Street sits on the former State Prison of Southern Michigan grounds, alongside G. Robert Cotton, Parnall, and the Charles Egeler Reception Center.
