A Massachusetts DOC–operated treatment center in Plymouth for men civilly committed for substance-use treatment under Section 35 — scheduled to close by December 31, 2026.

Overview

The Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center, known as MASAC at Plymouth, is a Massachusetts DOC–operated center for men civilly committed under Section 35 (Chapter 123, Section 35) for substance-use treatment. The men held there are committed for treatment, not serving criminal sentences. It is the only Section 35 facility overseen by the DOC. MASAC is scheduled to close by December 31, 2026, as the state moves Section 35 treatment to health-agency facilities.

What Makes MASAC Different

  • It holds men civilly committed for substance-use treatment under Section 35, not people serving criminal sentences — so visiting, calls, and contact are arranged with the center and differ from a prison.
  • It is the only Section 35 facility overseen by the DOC, and it is scheduled to close by December 31, 2026, as Section 35 treatment moves to health-agency facilities.
  • It is in Plymouth, in southeastern Massachusetts (Plymouth County), on the state DOC grounds in the Myles Standish State Forest area.
