Sending Money in Massachusetts (MA DOC)
How to deposit money to an incarcerated person's canteen account in Massachusetts — through Access Corrections (online, by app, by phone, or in person at some facilities) — and why communications no longer require a separate paid account.
How to deposit
Massachusetts routes money to an incarcerated person’s canteen (personal) account through Access Corrections, the DOC’s “Secure Deposits” vendor. Deposits can be made:
- Online at accesscorrections.com,
- through the Access Corrections app, or
- by phone at 1-866-345-1884 (available 24/7; Visa/Mastercard).
This applies to every MA DOC prison.
In-person deposits
Some institutions also accept an in-person deposit by check or money order. Whether a facility offers this varies, so the facility can confirm before a deposit is brought in person.
All deposits must be in U.S. funds.
How the account works
Money sits in the person’s canteen (personal) account and is used for commissary purchases.
Money is separate from communications
Money for the canteen account is separate from communications. In Massachusetts, phone calls, video visits, and messaging are free (since December 2023), so funding a separate phone account is not required. For details on calling and video, see the phone & video guide.
Fees and limits
Fees and limits change. Check Access Corrections for current fees, limits, and how to set up an account. A quoted figure is not reliable; the vendor’s current schedule is the authoritative source.
