A large general-population men's prison near Jasper in north Florida, with an active on-campus Annex.

Overview

Hamilton Correctional Institution is a large general-population men’s prison near Jasper in Hamilton County, in north Florida just south of the Georgia line. It is operated by the Florida Department of Corrections and holds men in mixed custody. Its capacity of about 2,291 includes the on-campus Annex, making it one of the larger campuses in the region.

What Makes Hamilton Different

  • It is a two-part campus. A separately listed Hamilton Correctional Institution Annex (FDC #250) operates on the same grounds and is folded in here as a satellite — families must confirm whether the person is housed at the main CI or the Annex, as each may have its own visiting handling.
  • The on-grounds work camp is temporarily closed, so that population is not currently housed there — confirm placement.
  • It offers academic and vocational programs, including a construction and trades slate, IT, logistics, and a canine obedience training program.
  • The institution shown in the offender search can change if the person is transferred.

Mail

Florida does not deliver original personal mail to the prison. Routine personal letters and photos go to an off-site Smart Communications processing center, where they are opened and scanned and delivered electronically — the person reads them on a tablet or kiosk, and the mailroom may print copies. Address routine mail with the person’s full name and DC number, to: Smart Communications, P.O. Box 23608, Tampa, FL 33623. Confirm the current address and format on FDC’s website before sending. Legal mail and privileged correspondence go directly to the institution, not to the scanning center. Publications must come from an approved publisher or retailer. Full rules are in Mail & Packages.
