Pleasant Valley State Prison, near Coalinga in the western San Joaquin Valley, houses men across custody levels and includes a licensed correctional treatment center for medical and mental-health care. What Makes Pleasant Valley State Prison Different
- It is in one of the parts of California where Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis) is most prevalent, with a documented history of outbreaks in the 2000s.
- California’s prison health system places it in its most restrictive Valley Fever tier: in addition to excluding people who are immunocompromised, post-transplant, or pregnant, the policy restricts housing here for people who are Black or Filipino, or who have diabetes, unless they have prior immunity.
- A 2013 federal court and the prison medical receiver ordered the transfer of people at higher Valley Fever risk out of Pleasant Valley and Avenal.
- It has an on-site correctional treatment center.
