Overview
Folsom State Prison is one of the oldest institutions in the California prison system. CDCR says Folsom primarily houses Level II and Level III general population men and also operates a Level I minimum support facility outside the main perimeter.
The institution’s history is closely tied to California’s early prison expansion. CDCR says the site was selected for its granite and water access, and incarcerated labor helped build early dam and canal infrastructure on the American River.
What Makes Folsom State Prison Different
- CDCR identifies Folsom as California’s second-oldest prison and one of the nation’s earliest maximum-security prison sites.
- The prison includes both the main medium-custody institution and a separate minimum support facility just outside the primary security perimeter.
- Folsom’s location was chosen for native granite, and the institution’s early construction history is tied to the first dam and canal on the American River.
- Visiting rules split sharply between contact walk-ins and non-contact visits. CDCR states that non-contact visits are always one-hour scheduled appointments and are not accepted as walk-ins.
Visiting Hours and Procedures
CDCR posts both the general visiting hours and the walk-in sign-up rules on Folsom’s visiting status page.
CDCR says visitors may arrive no more than 30 minutes before processing begins. The institution opens processing at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays and 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Scheduled visitors who arrive late can lose their appointment slot, and the walk-in queue is handled separately through the institution’s numbered pass system.
Walk-ins are narrower than the posted general hours. CDCR says Friday walk-in sign-up starts at noon, with first walk-ins accepted at 1:00 p.m. if no-show space is available, and weekend walk-in sign-up starts at 7:00 a.m. with first walk-ins accepted at 8:00 a.m. Non-contact visits remain appointment-only. General statewide rules, dress code, and approval requirements are covered in Visiting in California.
Getting There and Parking
Folsom State Prison is east of Sacramento in the Represa/Folsom area, reached by regional freeways and then local roads for the final approach.
Nearby Services
Most fuel, food, and hotel options are in Folsom rather than in Represa itself. The largest clusters are along East Bidwell Street, Historic Folsom, and the US-50 corridor before the final drive toward the prison.
Visitors coming from outside Sacramento County often stop in the commercial areas around Folsom or Rancho Cordova before turning onto the smaller local roads near the prison. Those areas offer a broader mix of chain food, grocery, and lodging than the immediate prison approach.
