Overview
Centinela State Prison, near the city of Imperial in the Imperial Valley, is a male institution that CDCR describes as housing a custody mix of Level I, Level III, Level III Sensitive Needs, and Level IV (maximum), with mandated work and study, academic and vocational programs, and substance-use treatment. It opened in 1993 and takes its name from Mount Signal — “Centinela” — the peak on the U.S.-Mexico border near the prison.
Centinela runs well above its design capacity, about 3,500 men against roughly 2,300 designed beds (2026); population figures change, so CDCR’s population reports are the current source.
What Makes Centinela State Prison Different
- It houses a Sensitive Needs Yard (SNY) population — people who require protective housing — alongside general population.
- It sits in the Imperial Valley desert close to the U.S.-Mexico border (about 10 miles away); visitors traveling from across the border are subject to the same ID rules as all visitors, covered in the statewide visiting guide.
- It is remote from major cities, with a long drive for most visitors and extreme summer heat.
- Its custody mix ranges from minimum (Level I) to maximum (Level IV).
Visiting Hours and Procedures
Centinela visits are arranged in advance, not by drop-in.
General statewide rules, dress code, and the approval process are covered in Visiting in California.
Getting There and Parking
Centinela is about 20 miles from El Centro, reached by I-8 and local desert roads.
There is no public transit to the prison; a private vehicle is the practical way to reach it. The nearest 24-hour emergency room is Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley; El Centro Regional Medical Center is also in the area.
Nearby Services
El Centro and the city of Imperial have the nearest gas, food, and lodging, with more options across the valley in Brawley. Visitors from San Diego or Los Angeles usually make their last full-service stop near El Centro.
For broader family support beyond the institution itself, Friends Outside is a California nonprofit, operating since 1955, that assists families of incarcerated people and operates visitor centers at state prisons.
