Overview
William C. Holman Correctional Facility, on Highway 21 north of Atmore in Escambia County, is a men’s prison that serves a narrow, specialized role. It is Alabama’s primary death-row facility for men and holds the state’s only execution chamber. In January 2020, ADOC closed Holman’s main general-population unit after its underground power, water, and sewer systems failed, transferring more than 400 men to other prisons; the death-row housing and the execution chamber remained in operation. The facility now holds a small population — about 213 men as of April 2026. It runs Alabama’s prison license-plate (tag) plant and a sewing operation that produces linens for state prisons.
What Makes Holman Different
- It is Alabama’s primary death-row facility for men and holds the state’s only execution chamber.
- Its main general-population unit closed in January 2020 after utility failures, so it now holds a small, specialized population.
- It operates Alabama’s prison license-plate (tag) plant and a sewing operation.
- Because of its death-row mission, visiting and housing rules differ from a general-population prison — confirm the person’s status and visit format.
