Overview
Sussex I State Prison, near Waverly, is a maximum-security prison for men, opened in 1998. It held Virginia’s men’s death row from 1998 until the state abolished the death penalty in 2021; the few men who had been condemned were resentenced to life, and there is no death row in Virginia now. The prison offers a high-security intensive re-entry program among its services.
The neighboring Sussex II State Prison — an identical building on the same road — closed on July 1, 2024, and its staff were reassigned mainly to Sussex I. Because the two prisons look alike and share Musselwhite Drive, families should make sure they are going to Sussex I (24414 Musselwhite Drive).
What Makes Sussex I Different
- It is a maximum-security men’s prison. Most men here are at higher custody levels.
- The former men’s death row. Virginia’s death row was here until 2021; the death penalty has since been abolished.
- The closed prison next door. The identical Sussex II closed in 2024 — confirm the address so a visit isn’t planned to the wrong building.
